Don’t Worry About Scrooge This Christmas, By Shopping Online You’ll Save Plenty Of Time And Money

According to a study by BizRate Research, 60% of women were already planning their online buying in September, compared to only 42% of men. Women are also reported to carry the burden of Christmas shopping with 55% taking on the responsibility, compared to only 45% of men. However, as more and more retailers go online, women can exploit the internet by saving themselves time, money and effort.

There are many advantages to shopping online:

* You have more choice
* Prices tend to be lower
* It’s scientifically proven to be less stressful!

Choice:

Even if you live in a big city, you’d have to be prepared to shop in multiple districts to get the same choice that you would have online. Most high street retailers now have a presence on the internet in any case and you may find that the website could offer more choice than your local store. In addition to big brand names, there are also lots of specialist sites on the internet – which only have an online presence. Such online specialists include CCL – a computer system and accessory specialist, Justtoys -with toys for kids and “big kids” ( http://www.justtoys.com/ ) and ChristmasHamper.com ( http://www.christmashamper.com/ )or Highland Fayre which specialise in luxury food and drink hampers.

Lower prices:

Many websites offer minimal delivery charges and because they don’t have the same costs as a bricks and mortar business, their prices to the consumer are often lower. Most transactions on the internet start with a search engine, but this is not the only method of research that you can do for your Christmas shopping. Perhaps you have heard of price comparison sites which exist for very specific markets such as personal finance like moneynet.co.uk ( http://www.moneynet.co.uk/ ) or for more general shopping services (Kelkoo, Ciao ). These sites act as mini search engines and they will collect data from a range of services – showing the results of products with the lowest prices.

Internet shopping is healthier

Internetretailer.com reported in 2003 that when twin sisters were asked to conduct Christmas shopping - one online, one offline, the sister who did her shopping on the internet fared much better. ( http://www.internetretailer.com/dailyNews.asp?id=10847 )The sister who shopped on the high street took four hours to complete her shopping trip. At the start of the shopping expedition, this sister had a heart rate of 67 which rose to 138 whilst shopping and was still 79 when she got home – apparently “tired and cold, with sore feet”.

On the other hand, her twin sister who had done her Christmas shopping online – took only 36 minutes to do her purchasing – and that was without broadband! Her initial heart rate was 66 and didn’t rise above 67. Instead of dragging the kids around the shops, this twin was able to have them on her lap, and all the shopping was delivered direct to the home.

And if you want some assistance in the New Year to lose those few extra pounds, there’s always online help for losing weight. The high profile website theleanteam.co.uk, as featured on Channel 4, provides useful health advice and if that still isn’t enough to tempt you online for Christmas – take a look at Disco Dancing Santa - http://www.northpole.com/Clubhouse/DancingSanta/

Domain Registration For Great Search Engine Ranking

A solid keyword domain name is the key to establish a strong presence and making the resources of the Internet more reachable. With a great name, it's always easy to reach new and existing clients. Therefore, a number of companies are ready to spend a large amount of money to get hold of and promote a good keyword rich domain name.

Choosing a keyword domain name can be vital to the success of a website. In order to take advantage of search engine traffic, people choose keyword domain. By selecting a domain that is equivalent to a keyword search, websites are able to rank higher for targeted keywords and thus benefit from added traffic and more potential clients. Whether to opt for a brandable domain or a keyword domain is a choice one must make in accordance with their business plan.

Follow these simple rules to maximize the benefit of a keyword domain, accomplish success in directory submissions, and enhance site keyword density:

Structuring

Order the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in such a manner that more vital keywords are listed before those that are less important. For example, if he target keyword is "money" then money-online.com would be more effectual than online-money.com.

Length

1. A majority of studies confirms that a number of people use two words or more in a search; as a result phrases are very useful.

2. Always stick to two-three keywords, with hyphens in between.

3. A lengthy, complex URL is more likely to be rejected by directory editors’ sites from which one would like to receive links.

Correct English and Must Make Sense

1. In order to execute directory submissions and link popularity campaigns, the URL should be grammatically correct.

2. When examined by an editor, "money-online-white.com" might sound like a less-reliable resource while "white-money-online.com" sounds more justifiable and is less likely to be questioned.

Put together "power words"

In order to create a distinctive domain name that is still available, one way is to add another less important word to the mix. A few examples include: now, top, just, goto, pro, guide, online and find etc.

Avoid using most popular keyword phrases

There is intense competition for keywords in the marketplace, so stay away from the most popular keyword phrases. It is impractical to think that a new website could rank number one on a popular phrase like “Shop Online”. A number of well-known companies who have been on the Internet for a few years will have the big advantage of link popularity and click popularity.

Try to register a .com domain

Always use ".com". In case it is a business website, avoid using domains ending with "ru" or "org". At once, one can consider registering a ".net" domain, but as most people are familiar with ".com", it is better to stick to convention.

In addition to the above, an understanding of the domain name system (DNS) is also vital while choosing a domain name. The DNS is set up to make regular words map to IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. In order to connect all computers on the Internet, an IP address is used by networks. A domain name can be up to sixty-three characters, comprising of letters, numbers, or the dash symbol. For example, in the world of computer networking, the web address fishing.com becomes the IP address 124.133.1.1. However, it's the domain name that people around the world use when looking for Web sites or sending an e-mail.

Finally, it is very important to choose a keyword phrase very carefully. This can be considered as one of the most critical decisions one will make regarding the success or failure of a website. One must identify the exact phrase that searchers will use to find a website. The more targeted the campaign is, the more increase in sales will be achieved.

Does Your Website Need Some CAPTCHA?

Many Business website owners have faced this problem: They want to provide a function on their site for visitor’s to send feedback to them without opening the floodgates to spammers.

Posting your email address on your website is generally an invitation for spam. Automated programs better known as “bots” will eventually scan your website and parse out your email address from the rest of the source code and use it for purposes other than what you intended.

There are various tricks and techniques to “cloak” your email address so that these bots do not easily find it. One method I’ve used is to include Javascript in my webpage that pieces together the email address when the page is displayed to the user. With this method there is not a valid email address in the page source itself. It seems to work fairly well, but some “junk mail” does still make it thru.

Another technique is to not post your email address at all on your website, but rather provide a “Feedback” or “Guestbook” type form where visitors can enter comments and then submit using the website form. This keeps the email address off the website completely by making use of a server side script which is activated when the visitor submits the form. Generally this script then formats an email message and sends it to the website owner using an email program on the server itself. The actual email address is encoded in the script or a database and is not available to outside visitors.

These feedback type forms help, but it is still possible to automate the entry of these forms, with the resulting “spam” being received. It does raise the bar, so to speak, in making it more difficult to automate but not impossible.

A better option to use along with these website forms is CAPTCHA. You’ve probably seen this in use on large websites with user signup pages. Before submitting the form, the user is required to read some distorted letters on the screen and enter them as verification. The idea is that the distorted letters or characters cannot be interpreted by computer programs so that the web form being submitted is automatically validated as originating from a human being rather than some automated program.

CAPTCHA is actually an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". The term is trademarked by Carnegie Mellon University and was started in 2000, so it’s not been around too long. In reality a CAPTCHA is a program that can generate and grade different kinds of tests that most humans can pass, but computer programs can not pass. The most common one known is the distorted letters and numbers test. A CAPTCHA must be fully automated without any user intervention, which makes it a reasonable option for website owners.

Adding a CAPTCHA program to your site helps provide a reliable method to validate that the information being submitted is from a real, live human and not from some automated program. The use of CAPTCHA is becoming more widespread and is not just on the major websites any longer. A lot of site integration examples can be found in the common website programming languages.

Some good resources to get started with CAPTCHA can be found at:

Does the American government see its citizens as its children?

In Americas 230 year history the government seems to have forgotten that there job is to run the government as the people see as best and not the government telling the people what is best for them.

The most recent example is the Internet gambling Ban signed into law last week by President Bush. The bill makes it illegal for banks and credit card companies to transfer money to casinos for the purpose of wagering on sports or games of chance, like roulette, blackjack and poker.

These games are harmlessly enjoyed regularly by millions of Americans everyday, but some people become addicted to these games so the government is telling all of its citizens that no one is allowed to play these games in an online casino.

This is not the first case of the government going against the wishes of the people, in the early 1900’s the government decided that the consumption of Alcohol should be banned, because some people were developing health and mental problems related to drinking too much. So rather then educating the people on the ill effects of prolonged Alcohol abuse the American government banned Alcohol.

But instead of reducing the consumption of Alcoholic beverages it increased, and because the government was not allowing the production or importing of Alcohol, organized grime got into the moonshine business, and eventually the Government saw the error of their decision and repealed the law.

Another great example of a failed policy to protect the people is the war on drugs that the government has been aging since the early 1980’s Billions of tax dollars a year goes into the war on drugs, but what are the results?

The price of drugs has risen, and to support their habits many drug addicts have had to commit acts of robbery and murder to get their drugs.

The American prisons are packed full of people whose only crime was possession of these illegal drugs.

Instead of being an industry that is regulated and controlled you have people selling these drugs to kids in school playgrounds, and shooting each other to protect their territory.

Had the government decided not to criminalize drugs but make it a heavily controlled industry, they could use the tax money for social programs like schools ad to give Americans universal health care.

Please do not misunderstand me I am not in favor for legalizing hard drugs, but the current system is not working at all, but I am all in favor for legalizing online casino gambling.

If I choose to play some hands of blackjack or poker from the comfort of my home what rights does the government have to tell me not to, and what sense does it make that I can not play in a casino over the internet, but I can drive down the street to the local casino and play there.

To enforce this ban millions if not billions of dollars of software and computer hardware will be needed to monitor all of the banks transactions and that money will come from taxes instead of the government taxing online casinos or even having all the online casinos government controlled then they get all the profits to be used to improve the lives of the American citizens, millions of which are bellow the poverty line if not homeless.

The American government needs to start re-thinking its policy of treating its citizens like small children, or the American people need to demand a new government.

Does Google Trust You? Trust Rank Exlained

It is over two years since a paper was released the basis of TrustRank,, yet even today, over two years later, hardly anyone outside of the core internet marketing world have clue what it is. The original concept was simple and in fact only a few lines.

Combating Web Spam with TrustRank. Technical Report, Stanford University, 2004

Web spam pages use various techniques to achieve higher-than-deserved rankings in a search engine's results. While human experts can identify spam, it is too expensive to manually evaluate a large number of pages. Instead, we propose techniques to semi-automatically separate reputable, good pages from spam. We first select a small set of seed pages to be evaluated by an expert. Once we manually identify the reputable seed pages, we use the link structure of the web to discover other pages that are likely to be good. In this paper we discuss possible ways to implement the seed selection and the discovery of good pages. We present results of experiments run on the World Wide Web indexed by AltaVista and evaluate the performance of our techniques. Our results show that we can effectively filter out spam from a significant fraction of the web, based on a good seed set of less than 200 sites.

Original document http://dbpubs.stanford.edu:8090/pub/2004-17

I will try to explain in layman’s terms what this is all about.

First of all you will need to understand about hubs and authority sites in the eyes of Google. Sites and pages are clustered by Phrase and topic as part of the Google web mapping. Within these clusters Google will identify its current hubs and authorities. Hubs being sites that link out to many of the sites within that cluster, and authorities are the sites within that cluster that receive more links to it than the others.

Google will Have already manually have rated these sites with regard their content, the sites they link to and their trustworthiness.

A prime example would be the BBC. They have a strict set of guidelines that editors must adhere to with regard linking to sites on the web. They also have strict guidelines set in place and overseen by government appointed bodies. These seed sites will be given a trust factor which can then be carried (or voted) to other sites, (like page rank) through their links.

Most niche trusted sites will carry links to similar content, or links to links on similar content. E.G. Reuters might run a news line, which is picked up by the BBC who rewrite and cite the original Reuters report. CNN might cite the BBC version which is more developed. ALL these sites are interlinking, and all are trusted sites. They might all also link to a website that originally carried the white paper/ allegation/ content.

So let’s put it into practice.

I release a niche altruistic website that is well received. The news gets picked up by the BBC who link to it. Various other news sites pick up on it and also point links to my niche site. In time other charity and educational sites link to me, as well as church sites etc. Many of these sites will be either seed trusted sites or linked to by seed sites. The closer the site which links to me is to the seed site, the more TrustRank my altruism site will get, the further away the less.. By default, if my TrustRank hits a level (caused by numerous site that have inherited TrustRank from votes), I might well become a trusted hub myself, making links from my site very valuable (in terms of TrustRank not monetary, although this will also be the case, but no one will know the TrustRank to know the value)

If you want to see a crude version of trustrank in action then look at the voting system on a forum.

If someone with a red (negative) reputation votes for you (good or bad), it doesn't affect your reputation, because in the eyes of the system they are not trusted because others who ARE trusted have said so. While a vote (good or bad) from someone with many squares of reputation can lift you up on high, or condemn you to the fiery furnace, while votes from those with one or two squares of reputation will count, but not for much. This is a simplified form of TrustRank.

It is my belief that TrustRank will compound so that the sum of the whole will be greater than the parts. so if a site got links from a seed site it would be worth x, but a site with links from two seed sites could be x +y + compounded trust value.

Below is a graphical representation of how it might work, but I have for simplicity not added the compounding value, and have used round numbers. Google PageRank uses a whole number of 1 as a base for each page, and a ’voting value’ of .85 of the PageRank value. (This being the result of the .15 dampening factor applied to all pages when determining the value of outbound links from a page).

http://www.umbrella-consultancy.co.uk/tr1.jpg (address of image)

That is my take on TrustRank. So the old adage of build quality content that people will want to link to, means more than ever now.

One last thing, in life there is balance, for every shard of light there is dark, for every white Stetson, there is a black one. If some sites ARE trusted, either by seed or approval of seed, then some will NOT be. It is therefore possible, that links from un-trusted (due to being TrustRank unknown) sites, might not get any link benefit to pass on? Just a theory.

Does Every Business Need A Web Presence?

Many small businesses today are undecided whether or not they should have a website to allow customers to purchase products online or further advertise their services. After all, building a website takes both time and money and hiring someone else to do the job for you costs even more. Some business owners may even think that since their company only consists of an employee or two, they really have no need for an online presence. Still other companies may not even want to sell their products online. What one factor do all of these businesses have in common? Believe it or not, they can all benefit from having an online presence. Fortunately today there are web builder tools available that allow even those with little technical skills to design their own website. Best of all, these web builder tools are available at a cost that is affordable to anyone. With options like these, there really is no reason why you shouldn’t have a website to promote your business.

If you think your business is too small to need a website, think again. Even a small business run by just one person can benefit from an online presence. The more people you promote your products and services to, the more sales you are likely to make. Without a web presence, you are losing out on valuable customers. Just like large corporations, small businesses need customers in order to make a profit. If you don’t have a website, you are losing sales to other companies that offer a product similar to yours. Sure building a website will take some time but it will be well worth your effort. There are several small companies today that make the majority of their profits from online sales. Your small business could very well be one of those companies in the future. Why not take the time today to see what types of web builder tools are available? Even though you don’t have to be a Webmaster to use these tools, you can still have a professional looking website that gives your company online credibility. How your site looks to the public is almost as important as the products you offer.

Even companies that do not wish to sell online or those that feel their products would be difficult to market online, can still benefit from using web builder tools to design their sight. First of all, there are not too many products today that aren’t being sold online. With the emergence of bidding sites such as Ebay, even larger items such as automobiles and real estate are being sold. Ecommerce in many cases has become the way to do business. By using web builder tools to design your own site, you can start cashing in on some of this online revenue.

Business owners who don’t wish to sell online may feel a website is a total waste of time and money. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. All businesses can benefit from online marketing even if they don’t sell online. By using web builder tools to design a professional looking site, you are making your available products or services known to the public. Just because customers cannot use their credit card to purchase online from your company, many will still be inclined to contact you if you present your products in a professional manner. By giving out your company contact info such as email, fax, phone number, and physical address, customers have a number of methods in which to contact you. It is always a good idea to list your street address even for customers who are located out of state or in a different country. When people see this it often makes them feel more secure about ordering from you. Once customers have contacted you about purchases, you can then make payment arrangements for products. You may wish to receive checks by mail or take their credit card information over the phone to process orders. Some customers may even be within driving distance of your business. By having a website designed with web builder tools, you have made your presence known to customers both in your area and across the country. No matter what your type of business, web builder tools can help you design a site that will increase customer revenue.

Do Your Autoresponders Drive Your Customers Crazy?

Writing chained auto-responder messages to sell a product is a good idea in principle, but in practice it can LOSE you clients just as well if you don't get right.

A chained auto-responder is a sequence of emails that gets delivered automatically when someone subscribes to this autoresponder.

It is used in marketing to deliver mini-advertisements, teaser courses, demo extracts, testimonials or stepped sales letters, and all of this is designed to get the client eventually to click on the "buy me now" link for the main product that is being promoted.

There are three main problems with chained auto-responders. Avoid these, TEST your linked auto-responders before you inflict them on the general public, and you should see significant increases in your sales.

Problem No. 1 - No Content Beyond Selling

This is THE most VIOLENTLY annoying class of chained autoresponders - message after message from the same place, trying to sell you something, in so many different words. YUCK!

What marketers who don't THINK seem to forget is that folk who own and manage PCs and email aren't that stupid.

They can read and write, you know, and they are not IDIOTS.

After two or three repeats, they will immediately delete such messages from their inbox and probably put a spam block on the sender domain for good measure.

That's not what the marketeer had in mind, I should wager ...

Problem No. 2 - Too Little Content

I remember one "mini course" which contained nothing but teasers and virtually no useful information whatsoever.

Once again, look, marketeers!

If you want people to "try" the product, you need to give them at least a little taste of it.

Don't hold the glass with the sample wine under their nose, and when they reach out, oops, that'll be $875 dollars please ... but we do have a "money back" guarantee ...

This is just ANNOYING, it's even dishonourable and an angry person does not make a good customer.

Problem No. 3 - Too Much, Way Too Much ...

I subscribed to another auto-responder teaser mini course just a few days ago, and here, the folks in charge had done a 180' U-turn on the two points above, most likely because they got it that those content less/content poor efforts don't work to sell more of their product.

In their desire to have it be known how marvellously content packed the main item was, they created this huge long document, of at least 20, 25 paragraphs for the first instalment of their chained auto-responder.

Gee.

Now I don't know about the rest of the planet, but I'm actually quite a busy person and I get STACKS of emails every day.

I try and cut down the time I spent on dealing with email because it does get out of hand, and on this occasion I was into something else anyway.

I took just *one look* at the plethora of writing and went, "Oh god, I don't have time for that right now ..." and left it.

Have you ever left a non-priority email for later ...?

Yeah, you know what I mean.

But then, the very next day, the 2nd instalment arrived. I opened it and damn me, there's another REAM of goodness knows what, but now I've missed the boat because this is No. 2 and I haven't read No. 1 yet!

I hastily closed it, feeling guilty and moved on.

But then, No. 3 arrived - another book length instalment. I just couldn't handle it anymore.

I deleted the lot.

Now that's a terrible shame because there may have been valuable information I never got, and the guys who wrote this spend AGES doing it.

So, here are my suggestion for chained auto-responders copy.

1. Head it with, "Busy? Save me! I contain important information!" or words to that effect.

2. Keep it SHORT. Pick out ONE USEFUL thing and just - tell me THAT. So I can glance at it and say, "Hey, that's useful! Cool! Thanks, guys!" When I mean short, I mean anything above three paragraphs is way, way too long for an autoresponder email in this day and age.

3. Keep it TOTALLY FOCUSSED on the product you are selling. I'm on autoresponders where you wouldn't begin to guess for all the waffle, testimonials, side tracks and "personal messages" what I'm supposed to be BUYING at the end of the day!

4. Give people a chance to keep up. Space your messages three days, don't inundate us. Or better still, test this for yourself. One hell of a lot of "internet marketing wisdom" is completely out of date now because it was researched back in the days when we got four emails a week, and not fourteen thousand each. Time has moved on and requires NEW thinking, and different strategies.

My last tip on chained autoresponders is as follows.

Subscribe yourself to OTHER PEOPLE'S efforts.

Don't look at them as a marketeer would, but as though you were a human being in front of their computer, if you know what I mean by that.

You can learn what pleases and what works, and what doesn't.

Mark out to yourself what you like and use this in your own efforts, and avoid what really turns you off.

Lastly, keep working at your chained autoresponder copy until you have something that really works, and really brings in lots more sales.

They are a great resource - if handle them right.

Do You Want To Increase Your Google Adsense Revenue?

How much revenue do you generate from Google Adsense?

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about people who earn over $10,000 a month just from Adsense. Furthermore, there are rumors of a few individuals who earn over $1 million a year just from using the power of Google advertisements.

So what is Google Adsense and how can you use this program to earn a six-figure income?

About two years ago, Google created this program to help websites to monetize their web-traffic.

Here’s how it works:

Webmasters obtain a special code from Google which then displays targeted ads on their website. Whenever a visitor clicks on one of these ads, the webmaster earns a commission. Unlike other online businesses, there is no selling involved. All you need to do is get people to click on the ads.

Although this is an excellent way to generate an income, many websites are not effectively maximizing their Adsense potential. As a result, they are leaving a lot of cash on the table.

The question is how can you increase your Adsense revenue without increasing the number of web visitors?

The key to earning an income with Google Adsense is to have your ads match the rest of the site, making them look like part of your content. Your focus is to avoid having the Adsense blocks look like blatant advertisements.

The following are six ways that you can do this and increase your revenue at the same time:

1) Find the right place- Most website visitors read content that is in the middle of a webpage. As a result, the best place to put your Adsense block is in the top part of the page, at the beginning of your web content. You want to weave the Google Ads into your web content to give the appearance that they are extra links which expand on the information of the page.

2) Use the Large Rectangle–With Google Adsense, you have the option of picking different ad formats. Most of the time people opt to use the Leaderboard (728x90) or Wide Skyscraper (160x600) style ads. Unfortunately, this is the wrong choice, because both look like blatant advertisements. Instead smart webmasters have found that using the Large Rectangle (336x280) yields the best amount of click-thrus.

3) Ditch the border– Many people experience a sharp increase in Adsense revenue when they changing their border. What they change is very simple…they get rid of the border on their Adsense blocks. This is another way to make the advertisements look like useful web content.

4) Adapt the font- Whenever you write content, it should be the same font size and style as your Google Adsense block. This will help make it appear that the advertisements are a natural part of your website.

5) Match the colors– In addition to changing the fonts, you also should match the colors of your website. For instance, if your content is written in black, and your hyperlinks are blue, then the Adsense blocks should also be the same color. Again, this helps the advertisements appear to be normal web content.

6) Don’t have too many distractions- On a webpage, it is important to give web visitor a limited number of options. By having too many links and graphics, the web visitor might go to a section that doesn’t help increase your profits. While it is important to inform and entertain your web visitor, it is also vital that you monetize your site. So if the main focus of your site is to earn an income through Google Adsense, then get rid of all non-essential links and graphics.

By taking the time to implement these six simple steps, you’ll see a dramatic increase in the click-thru ratio of your ads. If added to all of the content of your site, your Adsense income will skyrocket!

Do You Want To Get Paid Just For Making Searches?

When you make searches, you are looking for something, which is something that we all do everyday. Well how about every time you make a Search, you get paid for it??
What a great way to earn money, but like me you are probably thinking, where is the catch?

Before we go any further, I am NOT talking about Google’s and their Adsense program. Which is very good, but it requires other people to make the “clicks”, and then it has to be on the advertisements that Google has placed on your web site. What Google does NOT do, it to pay you to make a Search! The Search Engine I am talking about DOES!!

How it works, is like this. This new Search Engine pays you, EVERY TIME you make a Search using your very own Search Engine Portal. So imagine, instead of using Google, MSN or Yahoo, or whoever you are currently using to make Searches, you use this new Search Engine. No real hardship, providing you get good results in your Search, it does not really matter.

It gets even better, it is not restricted to just you. They will ALSO pay you every time someone else searches on your personal Search Portal. So the more people that you can get to use YOUR search portal the better.

As editor of a large Article Directory, that currently has over 20,000 Articles, we receive hundreds of new ideas that arrive daily….but in this past week I have received two new articles, that have both made me sit up and take notice. This is the first of those, the other I will leave for a second article.

Every day many millions of searches are performed, admittedly over 80% of those searches are currently made by internet users that go through either Google, MSN or Yahoo, but none of them will pay you when you search, this new Search Engine does! Don’t forget that it was only a few years ago when Google started, and the big guys said that they would not last…..but now look at how big they are.

This is how the new Search Engine works:

You have your own Search Portal, in the same way that you would Search though any of the big three. Although instead of using say Google, you Search via your own personal Search Portal. The results that they supply, are both quick, and also very good, and supplied in the same way that they would be with any other Search Engine, but here is the difference!

1/. They will give you $50 just for joining, no catch, your account is credit as soon as you join up with them.

2/. You then get the personal link to your very own Search Portal when you join, which you then use whenever you want to make a Search of the internet.

3/. They CREDIT your account every time you make a Search, using your own Search Portal.

Now the potential!

The Search Portal link is specific to YOU, so the idea is for you to get your friends, and maybe even business colleagues to also use YOUR Search Portal, after all it will cost them nothing, and they will get good results. The more people you can get to use your Search Portal the better….BECAUSE every time that it is used to make a Search by anyone using YOUR Search Engine Portal link, the Search company pays YOU!!

It progresses even further, it is completely Free to you, and you get the $50 sign up bonus mentioned above, but if your friends also sign up, they get the $50 bonus too, as do their friends, and their friend’s friends!

So there must be a catch?
I have NOT found one, and I have looked at it VERY closely. In fact I think it is a great idea, I have actually tried it, and as promised my account credit increased as they said it would. I believe that it is a very novel idea and one that could really take off. It is totally free to use, it does not cost the users anything, and so as far as I can see it really is a win win situation.

The Search Engine I am talking about, is also a Pay Per Click Search Engine, so they DO want you to use the money you earn to buy Pay Per Click listings, but then if you have your own website, and you are accumulating money for Free just by making Searches, then it also means that you are getting your “clicks” for Free too. They also have paid Membership, which I understand allows you to take the money you earn in the form of Cash Commissions, paid twice monthly via PayPal.

From my point of view, it looks like a new way of getting free traffic to my website.

So finally if you do have a web site, or maybe plan to have one in the future, would like to promote it for Free, then this is something that you should really take a look at.
After all they could be the internet’s next big player, and you are getting in on the ground floor!

Do You Want Free Money?

It probably did not take you more than a second to answer that question—YES! We all want free money, don’t we? But how can we get free money?

Well, if you are looking for free money to use for college and university tuition and fees, you are more likely to find it than those of us who are just looking for free money. Check out websites and programs such as FAFSA and GovernmentGrants.com to find free grant money. You can also check out websites and programs such as FreeCollegeScholarships.net, FastWeb.com, and FedMoney.org that offer free money in the form of scholarships. The great thing about these options is that you are almost guaranteed to get some amount, even if it is not as high as you would like, of free money to use towards your college or university tuition and fees. All you have to do is fill out an application, maybe write an essay or two, and wait.

Now, for the rest of us, free money likely does not exist. There are programs, however, that claim to give you free opportunities to make money such as reading emails or advertisements, taking surveys, downloading a certain tool bar onto your browser, etc. For websites and programs like that check out CashFiesta.com, FreeCenter.com, and AbsolutelyFreebies.com. However, some websites like these require that you pay a registration or startup fee (low, albeit, but still, that is not free, is it?) or fill out all kinds of applications such as for credit cards which can lead to unwanted credit cards, spam in your email, junk in your snail mail, and all kinds of other inconveniences.

So, for those of us not trying to find free money to use for college and university tuition and fees, finding free money is going to be a little more difficult.

Do you have a pregnancy question? Or, are you still trying to conceive? Want to talk about your pregnancy experience with other women all over the world? If so, then no doubt that you need to find pregnancy message boards.

There are actually some ways to discuss and learn about pregnancy on the web. You can email your friends, chat with them instantly, or join some groups designed for pregnant women. Of all the available and possible ways that you can consider, joining and participating in some pregnancy message boards is by far the most popular and easiest way that you can consider.

Finding pregnancy message boards on the web there days is just so easy. With lots of sites out there offering message boards for pregnant women and those who are thinking to conceive, it’s no wonder that you can chat, discuss, or exchange thoughts with the other forum users anytime and anywhere.

Pregnancy message boards are also a great place to learn. As you may know, pregnancy message boards allow you to discuss with the other members your pregnancy problems, fears, or share with them your pregnancy experiences. It is also here where you can find other women with similar pregnancy due dates and discuss issues such as symptoms of pregnancy in the first week or first month pregnancy signs and symptoms, stages of pregnancy development and pregnancy trimesters. If you have fear or questions about twin pregnancy, the pregnancy message boards are also a great place for you to start.

Furthermore, the pregnancy message boards are the great place to start discussing or asking for advices about the right maternity clothes to wear, the right foods to eat during pregnancy, or even about the right food to eat in order to avoid pregnancy. You can also learn about the safe medications during pregnancy, pregnancy cramps, aches and pains just here.

It is worth noting that the pregnancy message boards not only cover those above mentioned issues or matters. The pregnancy message boards are also a great place to learn about miscarriage. So, if you want to know about the signs of miscarriage or you have questions about having another pregnancy after miscarriage or perhaps you just need some information about it, then you may want to participate on this kind of forums. And, if, for instance, you have some breastfeeding questions or advices or just want to post the arrival of your new baby in the birth announcements, then pregnancy message boards have spaces for you.

Perhaps what’s best about the pregnancy message boards is that you do not necessarily need to register as a member of the group or subscribe in order to access parts or sections of the sites. However, there are still some restrictions to your access. For example, there are some forums online that only allow their members or subscribers to access the members-only parts. But, this does not mean that the guests have no chance to know what’s inside those restricted parts. In fact, the guests are often free to register as a member. Joining or taking advantage of the discussion forums and chat rooms are even highly encouraged

Do you know how to search and find what you want?

Recently after designing a website for my family and showing them what terms our website comes under in the search engines, I noticed they don't really know how to search to find what they want. These are people I thought were pretty computer literate, as they have had a computer as long as I can remember. If my family doesn't know how to search I am sure there are many other people out there too, who don't know how to search. Even if you are computer literate, this article will still be beneficial to you as you need to know how to find what you want on the Internet. As you know some of the results are not always what you are looking for.

I recently read a newsletter I had received which had some interesting statistics. Did you know that when a searcher does not find the information they are looking for they believe their keywords are wrong? After you read this article you will be able to find what you want unless it doesn't exist and chances of that are rare.

How to search within a website
For the remainder of this article we are going to be using Google as an example. Let's say we are looking at the site www.imaginarysite.com and we want to find what pages have the word "financial" on it. You would type in Google: financial site: www.imaginarysite.com and it would return all the results within www.imaginarysite.com . This would be useful if the website you were looking at did not have a search option.

Finding sites that link to yours or another website
Finding sites that link to your website or a competitors website is an interesting tool. Sometimes the websites linking to your competitors will link to your website also. To search for links you must type link: imaginarysite.com. This will give you the results of all websites with links to your website that have been indexed by Google. If they have not been indexed those websites will not be listed.

Finding definitions
This is an interesting type of search. For example you may be reading a website on marketing and keep seeing the term blog. You have absolutely no idea what a blog is. To find out in Google you would then type define: blog. The best use for this search is with technical terms that you might not know.

Finding exact words
To find exact words that are in that order or grouped together, use quotation marks, for example "website design" or "purple monkey habits". Personally I find this search the best tools of all. A good use is when searching for articles and I am searching to see how many websites have my article. I would search "search engine basics" (which is the title of the article) and because there are a ton of websites with those three words together, I would add Alicia at the end without the quotation marks. Try it and see what shows up. This is especially useful to find more specific results.

Finding sites with a keyword in the address
To find keywords that are in the url (website address), for example type allinurl:webdesign ; another example would be allinurl:web design. Each example would give you different results. The first example would yield results with webdesign (as one word) in the website address. The second will give you results with web design (with a space between the two words). This search would be especially useful if you were looking for the salon named Pink Lime but, you can only remember that it has pink in the name and that it is a salon. You would enter allinurl:pink, salon, which would return all results with pink in the url and also with the word salon.

Finding your keyword and corresponding synonyms
Use the "~" sign which can be found on your keyboard, you just have to look for it. It can usually be found on the left of the 1 key on your keyboard. It is called the tilde sign. An example would be if you typed ~holistic coach. The results would include holistic coach, natural coach, massage coach and some others.

Searching the web and finding the results you are looking for is sometimes a difficult task. A lot of people search using just two or three keywords, which sometimes does not yield the results you are looking for. The best practice is to search using a couple of keywords and if that does not give you the results you are looking for, try adding another keyword after that until you really get the results you are looking for without having to search through pages of search results.

Do You Have the Winning Mindset to Earn Money Online Successfully

Many have asked me what the key to earning money online successfully is. This is not an easy question to answer in terms of what you can do to earn money online. There are a thousand and one ways to earn money online successfully but are they really the keys to success? Unfortunately, the methods to earn money online are less significant than the mindset behind it.

What really differentiates the winning online marketers from the losing is very much not what they do but what drives them in their actions. Anyone can try and experiment with a myriad of ways to earn money online but ultimately without a winning mindset, they will never succeed.

Then what are the qualities of a winning mindset to earn money online successfully? Well, the following are considered the key pillars of a winning mindset.

1. Desire.
The fuel to succeed online is pretty much fired by what you want to gain in the end. What do you want to achieve in the end? Is it financial freedom? Or do you to want to have more time to spend with your family? Maybe you don’t want to be very rich; you just want to earn a little extra income to lift the financial burden of the family. Or maybe you hate your job and you hate your boss and you hope to one day “fire” him and be your own boss. Whatever the reason may be, you must have a strong desire to earn money online successfully, because this is what determines your motivation and is the main source of your strength. So know what you want to achieve in the end and let this be the fuel of your success.

2. Focus
There are truckloads of ways to earn money online. You can be an affiliate marketer and sell other people’s products. You can join an online MLM business opportunity and build your income from there. You can even offer your own services or products to others for a price. But whichever method you choose, it all comes down to focusing your efforts.

From the moment you step into the world of earning money online, you expose yourself to a myriad of business opportunities. They come fast and hard and they never seem to stop. Every day, there can be a new business opportunity to earn money online that seems like the “next big thing”. And you will be tempted to “jump in before it is too late”. But the sad truth is, business opportunities will never run out, but the amount of time we have will. Each of us only has 24 hours a day and we can only do so much. What you need to earn money online successfully is not to jump in on the “next big thing” but to focus on “this big thing”. You do not need so many “big things”, you only need one. So focus your efforts on what you set your sight on and give it your best. You will not regret it.

3. Patience
Many people who first begin to try to earn money online believe that they can do it fast and easy. They think that if they try something that promises them that they will earn money online successfully, they can do it in a few days to a few weeks. And if they do not succeed, the method is wrong and they give up. Sadly, this is not how it works. It is true that there are plenty of scams out there that only want to cheat you of your hard-earned cash. However, most of the time, the reason for failure is simply the lack of patience. Gathering knowledge and applying it is a necessity to earn money online. All these take time and nothing comes without it. Be patient with what you believe in and your efforts will be rewarded.

4. Willingness to take massive action and commit consistently
Finally, armed with a flaming desire to succeed, laser targeted focus on your objective and a rock-solid patience to carry it to the end, you still need the last crucial ingredient to success. You need to take HUGE MASSIVE action and be willing to commit consistently. Your mindset alone cannot win the battle for you. You must be willing to put in your biggest effort to make it a success and commit to doing it consistently, because only with MASSIVE action can you achieve MASSIVE results.

Now, take some time to review what you have done up till now. Do you have a burning desire to succeed? Have you been focusing your efforts and resisting the temptation to join whatever new opportunity that comes along? Have you been patient enough to continue what you are doing and promise yourself never to give up? And finally, are you taking MASSIVE action to turn your dream into a reality? If your answer is a resounding “YES”, then there is no doubt that you will be able to earn money online successfully.

Do You Have A Vision For Your Online Business?

A characteristic of many successful businesses (both online and off-line) is that they have a vision for their business. They know what they are working towards, and they are creating a business that will be like their vision of the future. It is always a good idea to stop every so often and reconsider what your vision is for your business.

So how do you create a vision for your online business? The first step is to ask yourself what you really want to create with your business. Imagine the ideal business that you want to own. Do not be distracted by what is or is not possible and do not evaluate whether it will work. Just consider the possibilities and how aiming for what you want will be unique to you. No one else will be able to copy it because it will be yours.

Some people will be inspired by a desire to create something new and different. Others will want to create a second income. Some will want to create a new shopping experience for their customers while others will want to create new products or services that better meet the needs of people today. Others may just want to get rich.

Once you have imagined your ideal and have a vision of what you want, spend some time considering how you will make a difference. Will you be setting a standard of customer service that will be the envy of other businesses? Will your product or service meet a need so fully that your customers will tell their friends and generate business for you? Will you be an inspiration to all those who come in contact with you so that they will want to stay in contact and follow your recommendations? The list of how you can make a difference is endless.

Write a short statement setting out your vision for your business and how you will make a difference. If your vision is based on assumptions, spend some time testing those assumptions to make sure they are valid. Keep the vision before you so that it guides your decisions and plans for your online business.

Make sure you breathe life into your written vision statement. Use powerful language that is strong on stories, or metaphors or examples. Ensure that you speak from the heart and work to make the intangible tangible. Use symbols, themes, slogans, etc., to make it come to life and be real for you, your employees and your customers.

As you move towards your vision, ensure that you listen first and often. Your customers and your employees will be able to provide you with ways to achieve your vision through their feedback. Listening in a non-defensive and uncritical way can be very enlightening which will enable you to be better able to define the needs of your customers and to satisfy those needs.

Over time, you will need to adjust some of your actions and tactics as they will not be taking you closer to your vision. Through listening to the feedback you have received, and monitoring the results you have achieved, you will know which actions or tactics need modification or change. By way of a simple example, the results of an ad may improve with one headline but not with another. Change to the one that is providing better results.

Some businesses have experienced tremendous success through having large audacious goals. Remember that large goals can take a long time to achieve. However, if your vision is driving you strongly, you will thrive on taking the actions required to achieve your vision over a long period of time. Also, some visions are so powerful that they rewrite the industry rules and create a new competitive space.

Make the time to develop your vision for your future online business success. Know what you want to achieve and ensure that all your actions are taking you in that direction. Listen to the feedback you receive and monitor the results you are achieving so that you can change tack if necessary as you move closer to your vision. Dare to be different and to make a difference with your online business.

Do You Get More Spam Than Real Email?

The unsolicited junk or bulk email that you receive is known as Spam. Spam is a very serious problem the people have to deal with daily. Sometimes the junk emails exceed the regular email messages that we receive in our email account. Spam filter can be a solution for you to get freedom from Spam mails. There are different types of software to keep out the Spam emails from your inbox. Spam filters can monitor the emails that come in your inbox and prevent any Spam mail from entering in to your inbox.

The Spam email that you receive is due to the inappropriate usage of mailing list. The mailing list consists of email ids of different people and all of them can be flooded with bulk or junk emails. Many companies send out the Spam email massages to a large number of people who do not ask for such massages. Spamming is considered to be very bad netiquette as it amounts in violating a person’s privacy. Netiquette demand that no email id can be used without the user’s permission.

Many Spam filters are designed to help people who are constantly bombarded with junk or bulk mails. Spam filters make use of filtering technology to filter the contents of the incoming emails. Spam filters can effectively help a person by sorting out these types of incoming emails.

Different types of Spam filters can be helpful for controlling spam. Content based Spam filter is one type that can be used by you. The filter scans the content of the email, and searches for tell tale signs for Spam in the message. Content based Spam filters have however not been very effective in controlling the bulk or the junk messages. The main reason for this being that the spammers had devised ways and means by which they can communicate their message despite the presence of such filters.

Spam filters that are prepared these days are designed to give advanced protection against unsolicited emails and spammers. Bayesian filter technology is another effective way of controlling these mails. Bayesian technology is not like other filtering methods that search for Spam identifying words in the header and the subject line. The Bayesian filter uses the entire perspective of an email when it looks for characters or words for identifying a Spam. Another feature of Bayesian Spam filter is that the more it analyzes the incoming mails, the more it learns to identify Spam mails.

Spam mails can sometimes bombard you in such a manner that you may end up receiving more Spam than the regular emails. Most email service providers have Spam filter software enabled in their sites. All you need to do is select the options of setting the Spam filter for your emails according to your liking. You can mark the sites from which you want to receive or not receive mails in your inbox. Setting the options for blocking the bulk or the junk mails is entirely your prerogative.

As your knowledge of online auctions grows, you might want to consider making money online by joining a drop ship program and selling new items.

If retail isn’t your bag, don’t despair. There are countless opportunities for making money online with out selling. Sign up to take paid surveys, or look into sites that pay you to blog about their product. Do Search Engines Care About Valid HTML?

Like most web developers, I’ve heard a lot about the importance of valid html recently. I’ve read about how it makes it easier for people with disabilities to access your site, how it’s more stable for browsers, and how it will make your site easier to be indexed by the search engines.

So when I set out to design my most recent site, I made sure that I validated each and every page of the site. But then I got to thinking – while it may make my site easier to index, does that mean that it will improve my search engine rankings? How many of the top sites have valid html?

To get a feel for how much value the search engines place on being html validated, I decided to do a little experiment. I started by downloading the handy Firefox HTML Validator Extension (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/) that shows in the corner of the browser whether or not the current page you are on is valid html. It shows a green check when the page is valid, an exclamation point when there are warnings, and a red x when there are serious errors.

I decided to use Yahoo! Buzz Index to determine the top 5 most searched terms for the day, which happened to be “World Cup 2006”, “WWE”, “FIFA”, “Shakira”, and “Paris Hilton”. I then searched each term in the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) and checked the top 10 results for each with the validator. That gave me 150 of the most important data points on the web for that day.

The results were particularly shocking to me – only 7 of the 150 resulting pages had valid html (4.7%). 97 of the 150 had warnings (64.7%) while 46 of the 150 received the red x (30.7%). The results were pretty much independent of search engine or term. Google had only 4 out of 50 results validate (8%), MSN had 3 of 50 (6%), and Yahoo! had none. The term with the most valid results was “Paris Hilton” which turned up 3 of the 7 valid pages. Now I realize that this isn’t a completely exhaustive study, but it at least shows that valid html doesn’t seem to be much of a factor for the top searches on the top search engines.

Even more surprising was that none of the three search engines home pages validated! How important is valid html if Google, Yahoo!, and MSN don’t even practice it themselves? It should be noted, however, that MSN’s results page was valid html. Yahoo’s homepage had 154 warnings, MSN’s had 65, and Google’s had 22. Google’s search results page not only didn’t validate, it had 6 errors!

In perusing the web I also noticed that immensely popular sites like ESPN.com, IMDB, and MySpace don’t validate. So what is one to conclude from all of this?

It’s reasonable to conclude that at this time valid html isn’t going to help you improve your search position. If it has any impact on results, it is minimal compared to other factors. The other reasons to use valid html are strong and I would still recommend all developers begin validating their sites; just don’t expect that doing it will catapult you up the search rankings right now.

Do One Way Links Help My Search Engine Results?

One way links are a tool that can be quite beneficial to the webmaster. The webmaster’s ultimate goal is to have many visitors coming to his website in the hopes that they will look around and even make some purchases. The problem is, though, that you have to get your visitors there. One way links may be able to help you. They help to create traffic to your website so that you will achieve a better rank in the very important search engines.

What is important to note here is; that there is no 100% perfect way to get at the top of the search engine results. But, there are many things that you can do to work your way up this ladder. One of them is using one way links. These links are quite simply a link to your website from someone else’s website. Even though you have your link on their page, you do not have to put their link on your page. That’s a nice benefit because it keeps the visitor at your site, rather than wandering off. Also, it is beneficial because the other website owner (the one that your link is at) is going to do his best to get traffic to his site. Some will come to yours through his website. That means increased traffic from minimal amounts of work.

Why Does A One Way Link Rank You Better?

This is the bottom question. Why do search engines think that your website should rank better when you have one way links to it? One reason for this is because if your link is there, the website owner is attesting to the quality of your website. In fact, the search engines also believe that these links are better than reciprocal links because of this fact. The search engines are even ranking those websites that use quite a few reciprocal links less highly because of this fact.

Because the other website owner is committing to you by placing your link on his page and not getting anything back in return, this is held at a higher standard than those that purchase reciprocal links.

How To Get Them

Of course, the hard part is getting the one way links in the first place. Not many webmasters are going to provide this to you if you just ask. If you have excellent quality content that is directly related to their website, they may do so. More than likely, they will want something in return.

One method that many have found that works well is to use article directories. Here, you will produce a well written, informative article (or more) about elements that may be in your website. Then, at the bottom you simply add in your link and information. Webmasters come to the directory to find solid, quality content to put on their website. To use your material, they have to use your link too. It’s a win win situation because now you have a one way link on their site to yours.

One way links are a tool that will help your website rank well in the search engines.

How can a ‘business’ claim to be ‘passive’? Don’t you have to ‘work’ a home based business? Sure you do- but many new internet based programs claim to automate the income generating process, allowing you to rake in the cash while you do very little work. Some claim that you need to do no work at all. What truth is behind these claims? Depending on the system you are looking at and exactly what it claims to do, it may hold up to its claims, or not. Often, they leave out one very crucial bit of information – that is, you will have to MARKET your website in order to make any money at all. It is marketing that drives the success of any online venture. Why would these businesses be any different?

Let’s start with the ‘big daddy’ in the passive income claims, the Prosperity Automated System. This business proposes it has‘proprietary software’ that once placed on the net for you will produce $3000 sales over and over with very little effort from you. You can even advertise up to 6 other products on your PAS site and have sales of those products too. Just Pay a whopping $3995, plus at least $198 in ad packs every month and watch the sales roll in. When people opt-in and request a callback, team leaders call and close the sales for you. The professional closer concept is actually a great idea, as it eliminates the need for the business owner to be a sales person. Unfortunately, many PAS owners are finding that their PAS site just sits on the web with very little activity. The people who are making huge incomes with PAS are not treating it ‘passively’. In fact, they are taking a very active roll and running huge ad campaigns. The ad packs have not been proven to produce regular sales. PAS is not passive, as it clearly claims to be. In order to make money here, you will have to MARKET.

The 1 Step System attempts to solve the problems of the internet newbie by providing them with an ‘internet marketer’s toolbox’. ‘Everything you’ll need’ in order to promote and resell the system. It doesn’t claim to be totally passive. The 1 Step you have to take is to market the system. People who opt-in to your site are directed to a teleseminar where one of the owners does all of the selling for you on a conference call. People send you their money without ever speaking to you. How does this model fair? Sales in the beginning were very good as networkers called up other networkers to make sure they got in before the ‘two up’ compensation plan was put in place (far from the No Selling claim). Once the ‘two up’ comp plan was put in place sales plummeted. In order to make money here, you will have to MARKET to other network marketers. The teleseminar is designed to sell people who have been through the wringer with other programs, and the value of the toolbox is not immediately apparent to the internet newbie.

Emerald Passport is another supposedly “passive” business. They have an online presentation that claims that if you buy their information products you’ll have access to their presentation that once on the web will drive thousands of people to send you $1000 over and over again. For the internet novice, this seems like a dream come true. Once you look under the marketing hype, you find that the new rep is responsible for driving traffic to their presentation, and then once the prospects fills in their info, they are meant to follow-up with and close the prospect. Someone who has never been in sales may well find this to be next to impossible. Passive? No, not at all. You have an online business presentation, that’s all. There is nothing passive about Emerald Passport.

The Automated Sales System for Coastal Vacations proposes to automate the sales process once the prospect has opted into the website. The online movie presentation does the explaining, and then the tour describes the packages available. If someone requests a ‘callback’, then a personal marketing assistant (a professional closer) closes all sales. To its credit, the System’s marketing material makes it clear that you will have to market the website in order to make any money. You cannot simply buy a vacation package and sit back and collect big bucks. You don’t have to be a salesperson, but you will have to market. The back office has marketing tools, but if they aren’t applied, your site will sit dead on the net.

In short, the words passive and business don’t really belong in the same sentence! Beware of any business that claims you can simply buy in and watch your bank account grow. You will need to work in order to make any money online, period. If you have no intention of learning how to be an internet marketer, do not put your hard earned dollars into any program. Learn what is expected of you before you pull out your wallet. Find out how others are doing with the program you are looking at. If it claims to be fully passive – steer clear. At the point of writing, I know of no ‘business’ that offers a product that is totally passive and earning an income for anyone who bought into it and did NOTHING.

Dmoz is in dire need to improve its image.

Dmoz.org or ODP (the Open Directory Project) is a web directory which was originally created in 1998 as Gnuhoo by Rich Skrenta and Bob Truel while working at Sun Microsystems. The first controversy started soon Soon after the launch the directory and lead to renaming it to NewHoo after wide spread accusation that the name of the directory implied open source yet the directory was a closed source which negates the spirit of free software of GNU projects which the directory was originally named after.

The directory was sold to Netscape which is now part of AOL/Time warner and currently boasts of having 5,229,762 sites, 71,337 editors, in over 590,000 categories. The importance of the directory increased and its status and the status of websites listed in it also increased despite the Internet trends of using search engines to locate websites faster than navigating through a multitude of categories in a web directory to find what you're looking for. The popularity and importance of Dmoz to webmasters followed the increased importance and relevance big search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN placed on the directory and on sites listed in it. This can be seen clearly in search results with sites listed in Dmoz listed on top of most search results for most search term. Another value that has been closely associated to Dmoz was Pagerank, which is a value Google places on web pages, one of the most important factor that drives Pagerank up when Google does its calculation of Pagerank is the number of back links, and the Pagerank value of those linking web pages.

Dmoz is important not only because it is a great web directory, but because many search engines adopted it as its de facto directory because of the ease of importing the the whole directory data and reusing it as its own. Google's own web directory is based on that of Dmoz. The estimated number of web sites that use Dmoz's data as a base for their own directories, and the number of mirror sites of Dmoz are not known exactly but it can be argued to be in the thousands. This number translates to a huge number of back links to websites listed in the directory. This alone makes Dmoz very important to any serious webmaster in their website's marketing strategy, contrary to what Dmoz editors on their public web forums try to convince webmasters otherwise.

Having a very valuable Directory at their disposal the editors of Dmoz have a great deal of power at their finger-tips and they know it. I say they know it because of the over the top attitudes of take it or leave it, and its our way or the highway attitudes expressed at the resource-zone forums, the hangout of the egotistic editors. Many webmasters depend on their websites for a living and hence they try to market their websites with everything available to them in order to ensure a steady stream of income. When there is a perception that there is a great resource that can help make or break a website by the mere fact of being listed or not listed in Dmoz makes it hard for webmasters to swallow. This is not a bad thing nor should it not be controlled by competent editors. yet the stories of unethical editorial behavior, kickbacks, and revenge and overwhelming feeling of corruption and egotistic attitudes towards webmasters makes a person cringe at the mere mention of Dmoz submission.

There are many other stories and complaints about Dmoz, about its editors, about the way they run the directory, about the refusal to listen to suggestions for improvements, about their lack of sensitivity to webmasters, about the length of time it takes to review a website though they have thousands of editors, about their inability to get with the time and roll out better measures to control and run the directory while minimizing abuse and setting in place tools that help in enforcing a fair and equatable checks and balances approach when including websites.

There has been many suggestions to the directory and its editors, most have been dismissed as unworkable, or too much of a burden on the directory and its army of editors to handle, yet they forget that they have a lot of responsibilities to the general web users and webmasters. A constant theme with the editors is that the directory is here to serve the public i.e. the surfer/visitor public and not the webmasters, yet the webmasters are the ones who made the whole Internet what it is right now, the webmasters work is what the public seeks. Measures to accommodate webmasters and release that they DO count and that the directory does need them is required and DMOZ does need to reach out and work with webmasters to help make the directory better and more reflective of the reality of the Internet.

When looking at Dmoz as a project there are a multitude of features that are badly lacking and in need of improvement, some of the needed improvements are critical to the well being of the directory and to its survival, others are nice to have and will help make the directory better and help give the project the respect that it needs and is currently lacking.

One of the most important improvements is a system that will make submission and review faster than the current system which can take up to 3 years for a website to be reviewed and added to the directory. This is not accepted today as it was not accepted in the first days of the Internet. In todays world of constant change, it is very hard to even find a decent website that does not make changes weekly or daily let alone yearly. A site submitted a year ago may not be the same a year form now and maybe rejected on that bases alone.
A system that will decrease the SPAM the directory receives is the first step to improving responsiveness to site submission and review process. Editors claim that over 95% of websites that they receive can be classified as SPAM or BOT submissions. Captcha (a way to control web forms, which distinguishes between human and automated robotic entries and submission) or a similar measure should be put in place ASAP. If this measure is implemented to weed out 90% of web site submission the total wait time will improve accordingly. A web site that might take 6 months to be reviewed will be reviewed in 18 days (6*30*0.10=18). That alone would be a great improvement and it would elevate the heavy load on editors.

The second critical improvement to the directory and to its image would be in implementing a system of better control over editors and their power in accepting and rejecting websites, especially those that directly compete with their own websites or websites that they are affiliated with. A good start would be by implementing a system that marks websites added to the directory with an existing affiliation to an editor. Currently Dmoz require editors to declare their association, yet the public does not have access to base any complaints that is supported by this claim. Dmoz itself does not have to publish this association in the public directory but should make sites associated with editors clearly stated in their public profile, so when someone has a complaint about how a directory branch is edited they can find any relevant information in the editor profile where they can base their investigation of any unfair editorial claims.

Another benefit of the above would be helpful for the directory mirror sites when editing listing and deciding on a relevancy of websites to be included in their implementation of the directory data. I know first hand of some of the major implementation of web directory based on Dmoz data that administrators would like to know which websites exactly belong to editors which may need to re-reviewed by a third party before inclusion in their directory but the volume of the links in the directory makes it hard to weed out any sites that are implanted unfairly by corrupt editors and are being spread unintentionally throughout the Internet. This is in no way meant to punish or remove sites belonging to editors, but after all the accusations and controversy this may be needed and website using the Dmoz data can decide on their own what to do with those websites.

There are many more things that can be done to improve the directory but the above two suggestions would make a huge difference in restore the respect, the image and the spirit that the directory was created under.

Discover how you can, with 3 simplest of tips, boost your Adwords click through rates and ultimately income!

#1 Headlines
Many Adwords users know its importance and how relevant it is to click through rates and ultimately – income. But how many of use actually spend a great deal of time perfecting it? Headlines are one of the most crucial determinate of success in the campaigns you run! I will let you in one this, one of the best ways to write a successful headline is to copy what others have done before! It is as simple as doing a search on Google.

#2 Ad Groups
How many of you actually create more then 5 ad groups for any give campaigns? Not a whole lot as expected. The purpose of creating Ad groups is its relevancy and intimacy to the keywords. What do I mean by this? Take for example, “soccer betting guides” and “bet on asian soccer matches”. These are 2 distinct phrases yet they are referring to the same product. If you group them under the same adgroup and dump all the keywords in, this would reduce click through rates and drive costs up. Instead set up an ad group just for “soccer betting guides” and in this group can be other words like “soccer betting tips” etc…

#3 Get Your Ad Bolded
This simply means including keywords which you added in your adgroup to your ad body. Taking the previous example, your ad body should have something like “looking for betting guides and tips?” So when users search for either the “soccer betting tips” or the “soccer betting guides” phrase they would see your ad in bold, making your ad stand out and increasing click through rates.

Directories Post Big Daddy

Unless you are a webmaster or attentive to the developments in SEO there is a very real chance you do not know of “Big Daddy”, but Big Daddy definitely knows about you –or at least your website. Google’s latest update is impacting directories all over the world. Described by Google as not a mere algorithm, but a ‘major infrastructure update’, Big Daddy (satirically referred to on some bulletin boards as ‘Big Brother) seems to be an oddly appropriate name for a Google update which sent the SEO and web development world into total uproar over the ranking and indexing of their directories post Big Daddy; that is if one considers the explosion of webmaster bulletin board activity on that topic since the updates implementation. So intense and rapid was the discourse come mid-March that Google engineer and self-appointed webmaster liaison, Matt Cutt, advised Google to set up a team to address the ‘supplemental’ problem faced, for no clear reason.

For this to make much sense for us less specialized folk, some rudimentary knowledge the Google search machine is required. At its most basic, Google serves an indexing and categorizing function so that when people search for something, certain algorithms have already determined (are always determining) where they will take the viewer to look. This indexing is performed by the Googlebot 2.1 and the Mozilla Bot, both of which ‘crawl’ directories while applying content-analyzing algorithms to web content and code. These algorithms determine, among other things, which directories go into the main index (which is where you want to be) and which into the supplemental index, referred to in webmaster jargon as ‘Supplemental Hell’ since not only does it exclude its contents from searches, but is notoriously difficult to escape once thrown in.

The functionality of a special corner for inactive websites, spam sites, and other nuisances extant on the web is clear. The current problem and essential source of confusion, however, is that active, original, and non-spam directories, post Big Daddy, are being cast into the supplemental flames for no apparent reason. As one of the many people to comment in response to Matt Cutt’s ‘Gone Supplemental’ blog post of March 22, 2006, “Our site has been redesigned…If I do a search…most url’s are from our old site marked as supplemental results. Google is hardly indexing our new site…” And the problem was not limited to just one directory here or there, but thousands around the world, as the following comment, one of many, indicates. “I have a site with 4 sub domains including www. All of them have active content…all of them are supp and I do not see any return at all nor is google heavily crawling them. We are talking about 300k+ pages in the supp index for some reason.”

If it has not occurred to you to do so yet, it may be a good idea to see where sit your directories post Big Daddy. To see if you are directories are affected, simply paste the URL as a Google search. If the page comes up as missing it has fallen from main index grace. If this is the case with your directories post Big Daddy the first thing you will want to do is look for any code or content which might cause the bots to reject the page.

Any number of things from spam (or what the bots code as spam), hidden text, and copied or ‘scraped’ content (closely paraphrased with the same keywords) can push a directory into Supplemental Hell. Depending in the use and complexity of your directories, the services of an SEO expert or organization might come in handy to take a look at your directories post Big Daddy. While some webmasters are reporting a return to normal, others are still faced with difficulties regarding their directories post Big Daddy. While Big Daddy is drawing attention to the need for more and better communication between Google, the web design world, and users, it may be some time yet before all the kinks are worked out and fluid channels of communication for problems like these are in place. For now the best one can do is pay close attention to the indexing of their directories post Big Daddy.

Difference Between Private Label Rights, Master Resell Rights And Resell Rights

In today’s day and age of internet technology, content is king. Everybody that owns a website knows just how important it is to have content that will increase traffic. The reason for this is quite simple. Increased traffic leads to increased sales which lead to increased profits. But the bottom line is that everything about a website starts with the words on the screen.

Even though it may sound easy enough to get content onto your site, it can actually be quite difficult and time consuming. If you are running a business, you probably have enough stuff to keep you occupied outside of having to worry about writing articles. But luckily, there is something that you can do about this. You can take advantage of private label articles and have new content for your site every month. This means that you will never have to write content again; all you have to do is wait for the new articles to show up in your inbox!

The first thing that you need to get started is the correct definition of private label articles. Simply put, these are articles that you can modify any way that you see fit; or better yet, you can keep them the way they are and simply post them to your site. Unfortunately, it is not this easy. There are three different areas that you will have to deal with. They are: master resells rights, resell rights, and private label rights. By knowing the difference between these three, you will be able to take your site to a new level in a variety of different ways.

Having master resell rights means that you are licensed to resell a product as many times as you would like. For example, if you have master resell rights of an article you can sell the same piece over and over again to different clients. At the same time, if you have master resell rights you also have the ability to resell the resell rights. This means that not only can you sell the article, but you can also sell the right to sell the article to the buyer.

When you are dealing with resell rights, you have the ability to resell the product as many times as you would like without having to pay any royalties to the original owner. In other words, you can sell an article an endless amount of times without ever having to pay the owner a royalty on those sales, but you cannot grant the same resell rights to your customers.

Private label rights allow you to take a product and modify it in any way that you please. If you are dealing with a written article, this means that you can add words, change words, and modify it however you see fit. When you are done you can even claim the article as your own.

Even though it may seem difficult to decipher the difference between master resell rights, resell rights, and private label rights, it is actually quite simple. The main thing to remember is to make sure that you know which rights you have before moving forward with any action. This will keep you safe at all times.

Dictionary.com

Dictionary.com is a free website that offers a wide range of features. Obviously, the main service is to give definitions to words you look up. When you key in a word, you get a lot of useful information. Different meanings and usages will be presented, together with the pronunciation guide. One drawback of this guide is that you have to be familiar with the pronunciation symbols. You can also find out the origins of the word on the same page. More than that, you can find links to other specialized dictionaries which may have the same word.

What I really like about this online dictionary is that you can search for an idiomatic expression or slang and chances are, you will find it there. It also shows the meanings of different collocations for a particular verb. This way, if you are not really sure what you want, you are able to choose from a wide range of words.

From the main page, you can access an online bookstore, a thesaurus, an encyclopedia, feature articles, puzzles, and a translator. You can even make use of tools such as the http://Dictionary.com toolbar. If you need to look up a foreign word, there are links to foreign dictionaries as well. Do you want to improve your vocabulary? You can click on the Word of the Day link and even subscribe to the email for this feature. Are you a sucker for historical trivia? You can increase your knowledge by subscribing to a ”What Happened on this Day?” email. For writers, there are links to writing styles and grammar usage guides. Even if you are not a writer, you will benefit from the simple, straight-forward http://Dictionary.com Style Guide.

If you want to hear how a word is pronounced, you have to subscribe to the premium service. Another advantage of this service is ad-free access. No more irritating pop-ups every time you enter a word. You will also have access to color illustrations not available from the free site. The fee is not too high, only about $19.95 per year. Subscriptions are also available on a monthly basis but the rates are a little bit higher.

I haven’t tried the premium service but I think that the free service offers enough in terms of features and information. If you use the dictionary very often and you have no idea what the pronunciation symbols mean, then you can opt to shell out a few dollars for premium service.
